What is the difference between Counsellor, Psychologist and Psychiatrist?

They are all professionals in the mental health and wellbeing space, differing by scope of practice and expertise.

A Counsellor is trained for treating Mental Health issues.  E.g Anxiety, depression, stress, Trauma, Grief , Childhood and Adolescent issues , Substance Abuse, Emotional distress, Relationship stress, Self confidence crisis etc.  Most of these arise out of adverse situations, conditioning or experiences that limit a person’s functionality and cognitive abilities. Counsellors do not prescribe medicines but work with Evidence based modalities and behaviour impact models. Counsellors can test for diagnosis and severity of specific mental health issues using specified  tests and questionnaires

Psychologist  (depending upon their speciality)  are trained to test and treat more acute Mental disorders like Bipolar disorder,  Personality disorders, Learning disabilities, ADHD, Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome, Thrichotillomania, Eating disorders, Suicide intervention etc which are primarily adverse medical conditions, present for a long time in the client.

Psychologists often provide  adjunct therapy with medical treatment and can be certified or licensed to administer and diagnose mental health disorders.

Psychatrist is a medically qualified practitioner. They are equipped to diagnose and treat all kinds of mental disorders including psychosis and mental breakdowns, arising out of adverse medical conditions and imbalance. Only they can prescribe diagnostic medical tests for severe psychotic disorders. They are the only ones who can prescribe medicines and intervention treatments.
